Charlie Green's Top Ten Makeup Tips

Pick the right foundation
A pretty face starts with the right shade of foundation. "Ask for assistance when picking a shade," says Green. "Try shades on your face and then walk out into the daylight. Colors look different in natural light, she adds, noting this photo of her client Jewel. Lastly, don't judge the shade by how it looks on your hand.

Forget Perfection
Though her clients like Tyra Banks always look flawless, Green says not to worry about perfection. "For example, when I do eye makeup, I line the eye first and then I find a complementary eyeshadow. When the pencil goes on, it doesn't look perfect, but then you soften it on top with the shadow—it irons out the irregularities."


Make Foundation Last
To help foundation last all day, start with a primer. Green, who has worked with Molly Sims, loves Smashbox Photo Finish gel. "You put it on after your moisturizer and under your foundation. It mattifies skin and absorbs oil during the day so your makeup holds for eight hours and you don't get greasy," she says. "You don't have to powder yourself later!"

Add Body Shimmer
Makeup is not just about the face! "The decollete, upper arms, back and shoulder blades are very important to accentuate," says Green, who has worked with Gisele Bundchen. "Exfoliate the area with a body scrub and then put on a gorgeous lotion with shimmer." Green recommends warm shades like gold, peach or terracotta bronze when it comes to shimmer and she makes her own! "I take a hydrating body lotion and put in fairy dust from the drugstore—half a golden shade and half an apricot-peach shade—and then I shake it up!"

Flaunt Your Lips
Makeup artist Charlie Green has been in the business for 20 years, prepping stars for the red carpet and readying models for magazine covers. Green—who has worked with the model and TV host—says, "Start with a lip liner that's close to your lip color. Then apply the lipstick with the pinky finger, dabbing it on." Keep the eyes simple with this much color, she advises. "It can be too overwhelming."

Start With the Eyes
"Start with the eyes when you do a smoky eye," says Green of the popular look that she's created on stars like Kelly Clarkson. "Why start with your face when the dark shades will fall down on your canvas? Start with the eyes and do foundation and concealer afterward to create a clean area."

Blush Beautifully
"Blush is a secret weapon," says Green, who has applied it to Naomi Campbell's famous cheekbones. "To apply, look in the mirror and smile. Put a blob on the raised area and blend it with the fingers up to the hairline. Finish by blending with a cosmetic sponge." Green prefers cream blush in golden apricot shades, which she says are universally flattering.

Wear Color Shadow—Tastefully
If you wear color on the eyes like Green's client Adriana Lima, "keep it on the lid and contained—you don't want to extend it far up the socket to the brow," says Green. After applying a layer of shadow, "take a clean, dry makeup brush and blend it to soften the color

Take Makeup From Day to Night
If you go from work to a night out, bring makeup with you that complements but is heavier than what you already have on. "If you wear a brown or taupe during the day, bring a darker gray with sheen in it for evening or a beautiful violet," says Green, who has enhanced the eyes of stars like Avril Lavigne. "Top the lash line with liquid eyeliner and add another coat of mascara. Just remember to keep the same color palette and build on it."
